i was never too keen on leopard print on tights or any graphic patterned tights for that matter, but these lively tights really caught my eye, main reason why i prefer these scute-like graphics because it is more "forgiving" (it doesn't stretch as much as spotty prints..if you get what i mean..) winter is creeping on us, so unleash your inner animal before we wrap up in layers and head to our caves for hibernation~

Lookbook Love: Orla Kiely Spring/ Summer 2010.

Since coming to London, I haven't really been hunting for local designers apart from the occasional ( ok-- who am i kidding-- weekly) topshop trip, and I thought maybe my interest for fashion was taking a backseat among all the school work and travel plans and shows and literature that have been clogging my life of my late. So I was relieved to find that my passion for fashion ( excuse the cliche) was not lost at all when I stumbled upon this UK gem, Orla Kiely.

Now maybe I've been living under a rock for too long and Orla Kiely is already pretty well known world wide, but up until relocating to the UK I haven't come across this brand. Apparently it's a pretty well-established UK brand, though, founded in the 1990s and expanding from homeware and accessory design at first to a full line of clothing now. Truth be told, though, I think Orla should just stick to fashion from now on, because while their plates and wallets are cute with their muted colours and leafy motifs, they can't possibly hold a candle to this lookbook of loveliness!

the model's white cotton socks and peach tinted cheeks ( not to mention her lovely clothes!) are already having me giddy for spring.

This proves that the UK really does have more to offer than grey skies and drizzly rain. :)

Conquering the London High Street

New developments: I Think Fashion is now in the same city! Yes, I have relocated myself for one semester to London and will be joining Amanda in shopping sprees and wardrobe malfunctions all across this dear European continent. No worries, though, I will still be returning to New York, and I will retain as much of the East Coast Style as I can during my stay here, so the change of style will be a short one.

While I'm here, though, there's no way I'm wasting time dithering and dathering at home when I can go shopping! London isn't a city that is very forgiving on your wallet, so I had to lay off the designer brands ( which, really, not like I ever laid on in New York either) and went to discover what brits here call the fashion "high street"-- basically, affordable clothes for girls on a budget who still want to look presentable every day.

Though I did bring two big suitcases full of clothes, I quickly decided that I was sick of all of them and took myself to Topshop right away, stopping at a few other stores too on my quest. Here, dear readers, are the results.

This pair of over the knee boots I got at New Look, a kind of British H&M. The rest of the store was pretty atrocious but these were very reasonably priced and I scored myself a student discount of twenty percent off.

the tassels look like they're going to get really annoying really soon, but the good news is they are detachable.

and then, of course, Topshop. Much better than the Topshop in New York by the way, which is really kind of a joke compared to the palace at Oxford Circus. I got these zip up flats:

and, due to my obsession with galactic prints recently, I had to buy this skirt which I have to say i've been eyeing quite a while now. It was only ten pounds too and the last one left- talk about meant to be.

Lastly, I stopped by Accessorize and got myself some new rings. Accessorize was really nice when I went this time, and I loved the vintage inspiration in everything. These rings are just darling, I think:

so that is the long and short of it. I know, i really didn't buy much for a shopaholic of my degree. but more things will be coming soon, I promise you. Because the high street here is... well, what can i say? pretty bloody amazing.

APC Shows Us How to Dress This Winter

The new APC Fall/ winter 2010 collection makes me want to let my hair down, draw freckles on my face, and stroll around the streets with a stack of books against my chest and a cup of coffee in my hand. Truth: the first thing that I said to myself when I saw the catalogue was: Now that’s what I want to look like the rest of fall semester while I’m toting my notes around campus. I want to be THAT girl.

The French label’s winter collection embodies effortless beauty: not too dressed up and not too dressed down, not too trendy yet still irresistibly cool. The plaids, wools and muted colour palette of the new collection is slightly preppy but with a tinge of hip and grunge- the injection of a little French je ne sais quois that makes the end product a little more chic than Ralph Lauren and a little more refined than Marc Jacobs. This lookbook is not just a catalogue, it's sartorial inspiration.

Week 1 Challenge: Red Carpet Look

Althea

May: I thought this was a nice dress. I liked what she did with the top and the whole slinky feel of it. the colour is nice as well, but I did not think this was outstanding. I look forward to more of her stuff though.
Amanda: The scrunchy textured halter is a nice detail. I agree that the colour choice is good; a silky grey, and not a cheap silver look, but I am not sure its the right fabric because it doesn't seem to flow as nice, and there is too much wrinkle on the bodice.

Ari

May: I agree with the judges that this was a little bit of a disaster, but the girl has creativity and I think she could have turned out something unique and nicer had they kept her around. I mean, the idea of creating her own fabric was very original. I suppose I understood the elimination on the grounds of what she made this episode, but oh well.
Amanda: Hmm... I don't get what she tried to do with the “football/soccer” patterned fabric. This really did not answer the brief at all, I'm not sure any celebrity would wear blue striped shorts to the Emmys. True that she was innovative, but in this business, you have to be. Good call voting her off.

Carol Hannah

May: This dress was one of my favorites. I suppose it did not stand out to the judges, but I thought the design/pleating at the bust was absolutely adorable and I loved the warm colour tone. I like how this dress does not fall into the boring, unoriginal template of red carpet gowns and is very fresh and quirky. I do think the dress would have turned out better if she stuck to two layers instead of using three as the difference in colour comes out a bit clumsy, but I think the change in colour is so gradual that it does not distract from the overall gorgeousness of the gown. I’ll be watching this designer.
Amanda: Loved the colour she chose, the colour would compliment any celebrity's skin tone. I think the dress is very romantic, yet it has an edginess with the folds on the front, so it is not overall old-fashioned. Though I think the layers at the bottom adds volume, but I feel the arrangement of the top fabric makes it seem like an oversized slip-dress. Nevertheless, this was one my my fav designs as well. I didn't go gaga over any particular dress this challenge, but this might be my fav.

Christopher

May: I really liked this dress, as did the judges. Personally I did not think it was absolutely amazing with a capital a, nor did I think it was the best dress out of them all, but I agree it is a cute little stunner and very now. Would I wear this dress? Absolutely.
Amanda: Very chic! The judges were right on the layers of ruffles, perhaps one lesser layer would make the dress more elegant than funky.. but hey, if you're going to the MTV VMAs, then this is the dress.

Epperson

May: I did not like this dress. I thought it was completely overwhelming, unflattering, dull and drab. The tulle at the bottom looked ridiculous and dated and the neckpiece looked like it was strangling the model. Definitely not an edgy, fashion forward red carpet gown. Fail.
Amanda: There should not be so much “dress” of this fabric, the colour is so monotonous and old, it would be better to be made into a cropped tunic or anything shorter. There is no excitement (despite the attempt...) on the top or bottom of this long trail of disaster.

Gordana

May: This was my favorite dress of the episode. I thought it was the cutest little thing! I loved the geometric design on the bodice and the sheer overlay of turquoise. I also loved the length. Very original, well thought out design. The only problem I could see the judges having with it is it does not look very red-carpet, perhaps more cocktail. But I still love it. what a darling dress; Very flattering too. I did not have much faith in Gordana when I saw her first but now she is one of my favorites.
Amanda: The design played with the fabric very well, good colour choice that complimented the fun design very well. Young and chic. I like.

Irina

May: There was nothing very wrong with this dress, but then again there is nothing that is that great about it either. In general I thought it went the safe route and strikes me as quite plain and unentertaining. The colour palette I found very dull and the choice of fabric plus weird black sash at the waist seems uninspired.
Amanda: I feel that this dress is an extension of a lingerie piece, but I really like the fitting lacey frame of the dress on the top, and I thought this dress was red carpet-worthy, but I would have loved to see more texture open up to the flow from the top down.

Johnny

May: So I didn't get what was so great about this dress. I have to admit the back and sides were nice, and I liked the red, but overall I thought the dress was boring and a bit shapeless. I don’t see how this would flatter any woman’s body. I felt the judges were judging a little bit unfairly, giving him kudos for being the underdog. But I this is supposed to be a fashion competition.
Amanda: I don't like the red, red ensembles never really looks good on red carpets.. rmb Penelope Cruz's disaster? Why would u want to blend in with the floor? Anyway, what I really loved about the dress was how the dress moved; it flowed smoothly and I loved how the sides draped.

Logan

May: At first glance, this dress seems like a deathly, drab bore, but when I viewed the details of the dress (which you cannot quite see in the picture), I realized there are a few nice things to be excited about. First of all, I like his choice of leather at the top, and then there is a very edgy zipper detail (yep, it’s a zipper going diagonally down her front!) and a very cute pleating on the left bustier. That immediately made me give him props. The dress was also cut well and pretty flattering. It’s not a showstopper, but the details left me pleasantly surprised.
Amanda: I don't think the silver fabric worked, I would have wanted to see a more drastic colour divide; maybe the black with cream white? Create a more bold statement... because this dress from the front is really a bore to me, the only thin I liked was the singular strap (and the shape) that flows up the collar and connects to back of the dress, somehow makes it sexier than a bare back.

Louise

May: This dress, I thought, was pretty dreadful. How many times have we seen this fabric used, and the whole shoulder corsage idea getting used again and again? Yawn. Brown is such a horrendous colour choice, too, and if that’s not enough, she gives us two shades of brown dividing the garment weirdly down the front.. wtf. This leaves the dress looking like one side of it is dirty or something. The whole concept is hard to understand, and the look is very dated. What a failure.
Amanda: I think division of the colours are a mistake here, whats the point of a division if you don't want it to stand out in the first place? >;\ This dress is not flattering and there is way too much draping. She looks like she's wearing expensive curtains.

Malvin

May: Ok, strike me, and maybe I’m just biased because I always root for the asian, but I kind of like this kid. The dress did not fit well, I admit, and it definitely does not look red carpet, but this kid seemed to have a nice design, just not very perfect execution. I liked the pleating on top and on the bodice. I don’t know. I’m waiting for him to make something beautiful next time.
Amanda: I do love the folds, but this fabric is drop dead boring, (did he use canvas or what!??) and the silhouette is yawn. I would love to see this outfit, in a dfferent fabric and not the boring 'A' shape.

Mitchell

May: Well for me this was the worst look of the episode. I really felt for this kid but that did not make this look any better. Why any star would want to wear a “gown” like this on the red carpet is hard to come up with. Not only was it a drab ass colour, it was see through. And it has the weirdest, scrunched up neck ever. This dress looks like it came out of an amish woman’s wardrobe. I am not kidding. Even before he realized he got the measurements wrong this poor kid looked like he was making something horrendous with the dip dye blue and nude. the change in design, however, only made things worse. Hope he gets better next time.
Amanda: ….I really do think the dress speaks for itself...

Nicholas

May: I quite liked this look. The black, bandaged, little minidress look is very “now”, obviously, as every hipster and their moms have sported it. I have to admit his design is not quite original, as he peeled it right off lookbook.nu, probably, but it still shows he has an eye for the trends, and the look is quite fresh and youthful. Not like Lindsay lohan is full of style, but I could picture her wearing this. I suppose that works.
Amanda: The straps around the dress seem to be “misplaced” in terms of whole texture and if this were papier mache, it wasn't glued on very well. I do think that this dress overall is very form fitting and sexy.

Qristyl

May: Wow. What’s up with that weird spelling of “crystal”, first off? Was her family trying to be special? Ok no disrespect.. but that’s weird. Now onto her dress. I thought it was pretty much a disaster. Not only was it poorly executed, the fabric taste was just poor. The pattern was tacky and garish and would not have done well on the red carpet. For once in the whole show’s history I agree with Michael kors’ comment on this woman’s taste level.
Amanda: I must say that at first when the dress came out, it was a fresh breathe of air compared to some dull dresses before this one, but I really don't digg the fabric choice, and true she was creative on the asymmetrical side of the dress, scrunched up and draped down the back, but this looks like a barbie doll's dress, which is best seen as a 8 inch garment..hehe.

Ra’mon Lawrence

May: I have to say this is a nice dress. It is a bit conventional, though, and I feel like he failed to take risks. I mean, it’s a pretty dress, the pleating is nice and the ruffle sleeve is pretty, but nothing wows me. Nothing makes it stand out and make me think: this guy has some serious talent. So I need to see more from him. I’ll keep watching.
Amanda: This dress from the waist down, is a bore. Is it me or I feel that it wasn't very well hemmed? The top being very elegant as well as the nice detail at the back makes up for the boring bottom half.

Shirin

May: At first I wanted to be mean about this dress, but I took a look at the back and I have to agree the back is darling. So I give her a few points. But that can’t really excuse the dated, not at all cute look of the front. The weird cape makes absolutely no sense and the body of the dress on the front is super boring. I can just imagine what us weekly would say—something like “when we didn’t notice xx has turned into somebody’s grandma”. No. look does not work. Ok I still ended up being mean.
Amanda: Why is this colour so repetitive!?? the dress is so old fashioned, even IF the back has the nice trail of draped (“sparkly”) fabric, with a boring front like that no one is going to bother to take a second look.

I don't know much about Alain Berteau but as I'm just reading up on daily design news from DesignBoom I thought this design quite a conventional way to make your own "recycled" clothes hanger... haha give your closet that extra arty farty feel that you get from designer retail boutiques XD

Attention everybody! CHEAP STUFF CAN BE GOOD TOO!

a few days ago, while I was flipping through "People- Style Watch" ( yeah, I admit to reading that- SO?) , I caught side of these gorgeous GoJane.com t-strap flats with gold pyramid studs. The minute I saw them I knew I wanted them. So I perused the gojane.com website and ordered these stunners right away- and they were a flipping 11 BUCKS! I got them today and opened the box and what beauties! and right on trend for this season's stud obsession!

Alright, so the quality isn;t tippity toppity, as one would expect from a price like this, but who cares about quality when you're a broke college student trying to look halfway decent anyway? I paired the sandals with a plain white, sheer, zipper accented tank top and acid wash denim shorts.

speaking of web ordering, I've been doing a lot these days since I've been trapped in the hellhole of nowhere called New Jersey. I'm sure everyone remotely interested in fashion in the U.S and their mother know about the online sample sale website Gilte Group by now, and from that very website I ordered a very cute Steven Alan nautical striped tank top for more than 50 percent off. It has a very cute braided neck, and now I am even more in love with the designer.

apart from the absolute perfection of wearing the top with high-waisted shorts, I also tried wearing it not tucked out, letting the hem hang loose and free. And of course, blue and white goes well with red. I particularly like how this combo turned out:

necklace bought in China, shorts American Apparel. It's a very casual little girl look I suppose.

I've also taken to taking photos of pretty things sitting around my room-- here's a little selection ( some of my own stuff/ gifts):

I love how she paired those vintage flats and bag with the acid wash denim dress - RAW.

A playful way to wear the shirt dress, accessorised with a cutesy green bow, it completes a baby doll look. (perhaps a thin belt would work too?)

Another hot trend this summer... loads of denim shirt/dresses paired with the ever so popular gladiators this summer; Miss Selfridges has a whole selection of denim dresses, get them here.

Just Romping Around

Fashion lovers! now you must have been hiding under a rock for the past few months if you haven't noticed the hot new trend that has popped up recently everywhere and has taken summer by storm: the romper/ jumpsuit/onsie!

Like, I am sure, many of you out there, at first I wanted to dismiss this trend as a fad, because I though: hmmph, how could anybody look anything less than ridiculous in an oversize baby onesie? i mean, if you look like a model in your spare time, then yes, maybe you could pull it off-- but models can even pull wearing garbage bags off, duh. when it comes to us commoners, well then that's another story.

But this trend has been going strong for quite a few months now, and with all those romper sightings on the street, even I'm starting to get a little restless and am experiencing an incredible urge to jump on the bandwagon. but how to wear this trend without looking like i'm about five? I did a quick search on the internet to round up plausible rompers out there, and I have found that many of these rompers indeed tend to scream "incredible" rather than "infantile".

Yes, the following have made me a convert:

First of all, this lovely romper above designed by Adam Lippes has left me quite breathless. I love how it manages to look like a two-piece rather than a onesie- I suppose that's cheating a bit, eh? But what a lovely way to ease oneself into the trend. This piece is very sexy, sophisticated and flattering- notice how the shorts flair a bit to hide nasty cellulite? and a universally flattering halter neck. i would even feel comfortable wearing this to an office. imagine- a romper at the office! get it here.

and then, once we're comfortable with the idea of rompers, we can venture into bolder territory:

This is just an effortlessly cool look from Steven Alan's spring 09 collection. There is nothing childish about this romper; it's extremely urban and right on trend. I love the buttons and the crinkly fabric. how incredibly je ne sais quoi. get it here.

Now, knowing me, I like my everything floral. shoes, dresses, skirts, bags-- and that will, of course, also include rompers. while searching for the perfect floral romper, I found myself increasingly sick of granny-ish liberty prints, and so I was extremely attracted to this bold, graphic, colourful pattern offered by Kimchi and Blue. I love how the romper does not take itself too seriously, the fabric being comfortable and understated yet the silhouette still preserving that certain degree of feminie sexiness. Here, at Urban Outfitters.

Speaking of Urban Outfitters, the store really does offer a delectable selection of the style. This is another great piece by Samantha Pleet I found which can only be described as utterly adorable. The corset shape and buttons are absolutely darling and flattering, and the peachy, pastel colour is right on trend for summer. I can't wait to order it here.

And of course, if you have some spare change in your wallet, why not look to the big designers? Marc Jacobs always has something fun and stylish to offer, and this polka dot romper is just irresistable. Classic black and white print on a delicate silk background; well worthe price tag here. Now that's really taking this trend high-end.

Haven't posted much about the fashion sightings in london but just wanted to share a few pics of my friends from CSM and their outfits - (:1. Denim is really everywhere this summer.. been trying to covet denim dresses, shorts, jackets, tunics - anything really! so far only have luck with a pair from h&m. I really love the ruffles on the dress... and as May previously posted, aren't those heart sequin - leggings just darling?? I also really lose those Vivienne Westwood Jelly Gladiators (:

2. You can't see it from here but my friend's wearing a straw hat (told you it was IN!) and black pointed brogues. I like the combo of this vintage meets preppy casual. those blue pants do POP don't they - I gave mine up after I sploshed white paint all over it last year :[

3. "I am an old granny!" - was the first thing she said to me when I asked her about her outfit, i think she looked really adorable in her pearls, origami rim blouse and those pants (not sure if they are drop crotch though) FYI i really like the colour palette.

oh and the private viewing for our foundation course is tomorrow evening, so be sure to watch for the mega post!!

the slashing of the tights

so i admit i've been tempted to do this for a long long time. after seeing how grunge-chic and effortlessly fabulous bloggers like gala gonzalez looked in their home-made slashed tights, and how versatile the seemingly hardcore accessories proved to be, paired with all types of dresses, skirts, and shorts, i thought i simply have to give this a try. now at first I was hesitant because i didn't have the types of fabulous motorcycle boots or cute vintage booties one seemed to need to pair with them, but just recently on my trip to Montreal I purchased some peculiar zara trf shoes that only set me back 20 bucks and seemed like they would be perfect with a pair of aforementioned slashed tights. so i went to h&m, found the cheapest pair of black footless tights available, took them home and slashed away.

voila: (please excuse the messy room and very retardation worthy pose... it's a lazy wednesday and i can't be bothered with anything really)

i've only paired them with simple american apparel acid wash shorts and an old zara tshirt, but i'm sure the possibilities are endless.

i chose to slash the tights in the front as opposed to the sides, and not all the way down. i can't say they came out exactly how i envisioned, but really how could they? i was slashing them myself with very blunt scissors after all. i don't know, they're starting to grow on me. thoughts?

wow. i really haven't been posting properly these days. All my posts consist of insane obsessions over certain items with no intelligent text to accompany them whatsoever. i suppose the dying of brain cells that's associated with inhumane winter weather is to blame. All the creative, fashionable energy in my veins now has been directed towards a longing cry for spring.

O SPRING! hear my cry! you can't come fast enough! I'm sick of all my falling apart boots and my outrageous, tragic UGGs, which I shamelessly admit to wearing every day in order to fight off that stupid new york city wind. For this post, however, even though now UGGs might still come in handy, I'm projecting my vision into the future. What does one wear in the springtime, when it's too hot for old, ugly clunky winter boots yet still too cold for sexy summer gladiator sandals?

DUN DUN DUN DUN! ENTER THE RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING SIGERSON MORRISON GLADIATOR BOOTS!

while we're on the note of beautiful footwear, I just have to share some other pictures i've discoveed: the photos are of the exclusive sneak peak at Chloe Sevigny for BASS and Opening Ceremony's new line at London Fashion Week, and even though the clothes were gorgeous and very cool, it-girl Chloe Sevigny appropriate, what caught all my attention were the amazing strappy black leather wedges Chloe Sevigny designed for BASS that donned the feet of many a model and Ms. Sevigny herself:

now i really don't think those wedges could take the awesomeness any further.. i'm sure if i owned them i would instantly become the sexiest girl in town. I would be "The Girl In The Strappy Black Chloe Sevigny For Bass Heels". Oh a girl can dream!

A glimspe at fashion @ CSM's Showcase 2009

Okay, I've always wondered what CSM's prestigious fashion course come up with during their course, and last weekend I went to the showcase CSM had set up at Southampton Row to see what the BA courses are up to (kekekeke >_>) There were only 3 outfits on display by the Fashion BA course in CSM...but this gives you a pretty good idea of what 2nd (i think) year students do...

Hmm.. despite the "wearability" of this outfit, I am completely mesmerised by the colours. Psychadelic awesomeness anyone? This calls for a DIY session! Anyone has an animal skull lying somewhere at home, glitter bits and an endless supply of glue?

Now let's move on to a more subtle design:I must say I really like the simplicity of the white poncho. The division of the texture really lets the viewer absorbs the volume and draping of the whole piece as well as be more able to focus on the knit pattern.

This one I have mixed feelings about. But one thing for sure is that I love the textile design of the cardigan :)
HaHa...to end on a random note: May & I would probably wear all these outfits XD

The Asylum: A Fashion Show at CSM Backhill

Today, the whole foundation course was invited to see "The Asylum" - a fashion show pulled together by the Fashion communication class.
The show was due to start at around half past 1 and by the time i got there, there was already a long queue outside the Viscom rooms, I wondered if we were all going to be able to fit in...

After a short shuffle, I sat in the front row around the middle of the runway (good to see the beginning and end of the walk). Just as the last batch of people came in to the fill the space, a black&white clip of non-other than artsy enigmatic images were projected on a white cloth, which draped over the entrance to the runway. Electric funky dance tunes fills the room, the images end. The show starts.

(there are too many photos, so i'll just post a bundle)

On a complete random note, this made me think.. where along the runway are the best front row seats?

I recently went to watch my first Cirque Du Soleil show, Quidam; with a friend on her birthday, but I'll skip over my ranty show reviews and get onto the awesome costume design - my favourite was The Diabolo Girls. The costume was strangely familiar at first glance, I couldn't help but wonder...

If Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz and Miu Miu's '08 S/S collection had a baby....

Is this how it would look like?I just love how the skirt spin and float around the waist when they twirl around with the Diabolos.

Which reminds me.. I still have a pair of silver semi-sheer leggings from mango that hasn't seen much of daylight.. (i just took them out to try with my sandals. summer please come soon!)

Here's the question: what does the new year mean for the modern fashionista? yeah, we know, "new year, new you" ( can't say i haven't heard that line before), but what are the new names in fashion to look out for this year, the hot new places to shop, the new items to covet? what is the new "look" for 2009?

well, readers, if you have been pondering those questions long and hard just as i have, you are in luck for stumbling upon I Think Fashion. I personally combed through every other fashion publication, website, blog what have you- everything that i could get my hands on to come up with this list of what i think will make 2009 one of the most stylish years in fashion yet!

1. New Name: Yeojin Bae

Yeojin Bae has been popping up in every fashion publication from Nylon magazine to Refinery29 since the close of 2008. The korean-australian designer graduated from the prestigious whitehouse school of design in aussie-land and has since interned at anna sui and marc jacobs. her spring '09 capsule collection is feminine with an edgy touch, low-key sexy and irresistably cool.

2. New Name: Natascha Stolle

Natascha Stolle was handpicked by Refinery29 as their favorite emerging designer of 2008, and it's not hard to see why. American born and London-raised, this designer worked with Peter Jensen before debuting her individual collection, which she appropriately titled "Women Who Wished They Were Sluts in High School." Accordingly, Natascha's looks oozed eclectism, intelligence, and sex appeal.

3. New Coveted Item: Sophie Theallet's Chiffon and Silk Dresses

Elle magazine recently did a feature on emerging designer Sophie Theallet in their January 09 issue:

The designer seemed interesting and talented enough; what really caught my eye, however, were these two divine chiffon and silk peasant dresses in the middle of the spread:

these dresses, probably inspired by oil paintings, look like they came out of some kind of historical theatrical production, yet though extravagant they also posess a refreshing simplicity. the fabric and the colour are rich, and so is what the garment suggests about the wearer, but the cut and style are simple and fresh. These are light summer dresses for the stylish girl who wants to wear something different, who wants to stand out and look good in a way people can't quite put their finger on. look at how flattering these dresses are on a human frame:

personally i'd ditch the belt (or at least go for a more solid colour). but there's no question about it, these are some sweet dresses. added to spring 09 wishlist, check.

4. New Online Shop: Shopbando.com

Now everyone from the north pole to the south knows that headbands are the new "it" accesory these days, practically everyone on the street has one wrapped around their head. yet while urban outfitters and forever 21 offer us some nice options, they are limited in choice and questionable in quality. now, if you chance to be a true headband lover, why not take the next step and invest: www.shopbando.com offers delectable headbands and hair accessories at around 100 dollars apiece: they're really works of art to be worn on the head, and not so avante-gaarde that they look silly.

5. New Look: Colourful, Theatrical, Beautiful

Livejournal has this wonderful community called foto_decadent, where posters share some of the most sublime avante-gaarde fashion photography. I found 2009's new beauty look while browsing the threads; the shoot is from Korean magazine Numero, Jan 09, and the photographers are Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello. 2009 is all about going all out for beauty- the colours i've been seeing in beauty spreads are bigger and bolder than ever, and this is no exception. I don't pretend to be an expert in beauty; my daily beauty ritual consist of messy pencil-on eyeliner and lip stain, and maybe blush and mascara if i feel like really pushing it, but spreads like these just make me want to try on the colours and the theatrics and go all out!

6. New (ok, not new, but returning) Look: Flowerchild

wearing floral dresses and posing in grasslands is probably not a new fashion concept, but i'm just so thrilled to see that one of my favorite summer looks, the floral dress and the gladiator sandal, has not died with 2008 but will be, in fact, returning for 2009! In this shoot, from "online glossy" Zoozoom, our flaxen-haired model beauty has substituted the brown glads for an edgier, "new"er silver colour, giving this oldschool hippie flower child look a modern touch. photographed by Gregory Kramer.

7. New Look: Voodoo Queen

Now this is something really new. Zoozoom magazine wants you to dress up like a voodoo queen. I confess, this list item is just here so I can post these awesome pictures for visual gratification: this must be one of the most fantastic shoots I have ever seen. This shoot was apparently inspired by a real life voodoo queen by the name of Marie Laveau. The fashion in itself is not remarkable- so maybe it should be filed more appropriately under "new concept"? Photographed by Louise Hilton.

8. New Brand Obsession: Quail

I confess. I haven't been paying Quail enough attention. I should be. Designed by LA native Michelle Nguyen Williams, the line has been around for four seasons already and is cute as a button. Quail's spring 09 lookbook, chock full of flirty ruffles, vintage inspired cuts and endearing pastel colours just has me longing for summer! I especially like the styling of these loose pink sheer thigh highs in this pink overdose of a first look, as i just purchased some pink sheer stockings myself and was wondering how to wear them. Apparently, "Quail is the girl who sees the beauty in all things—the beauty in the moment—the potential for expression in every piece of clothing, new or old, perfect or imperfect." I want to be that girl. bring it on. ( new year's resolution: obsess about Quail.)

thakoon for target- the "i've seen it" report

tempted by all the hype surrounding thakoon for target in the fashion blogosphere these days, i felt obliged to hop my broke ass on the bandwagon down to the local target for a look-see.

here's my synopsis:
I have to say, being an avid fashion follower on a tight budget, i've seen many designer/high street mass market collaborations in my days, and, excluding alexander wang for uniqlo ( which was positively genius and will never be surpassed, god bless my little 40 dollar alexander wang for uniqlo vest dress that is the most beautiful item on earth), thakoon for target has to take the crown as my favorite one yet. of course, i wasn't around last year for luella, which looked fabulous from online, so ok, my judgement's probably not entirely objective. but thakoon for target IS good. in fact, it's really fucking good. i coveted just about the entire collection.

this cardigan caught my eye first ( picture from the rather unattractive target website, i'm sorry :( tried to PS them to the best of my ability):

i loved the idea of the signature print, and for me the tees were too casual, the printed dresses/coats made of too cheap target-esque fabric. this signature thakoon print is perfect, however, on this soft cardigan. this would be charming body-hugging with a black camisole inside or even extra large to create that grunge effect.

then my eyes went to the rack of green directly behind me:

these colourblock dresses were really nice to look at. i didn't have a chance to try them on, but i do see the dilemma of whether to belt it or not- a belt would awkwardly cut in half the colourblock effect, but wearing the dress without a belt means high requirements in the tailoring department for this- and since it's target after all, i wonder if the standards will be up to par. i can only say if you're coveting this number my advice would be to try it on yourself. with the right fit, this dress would be darling. i have to say the green looks much fresher in real life though. my camera phone isn't gifted in the megapixel department.

anyway, then my eyes swerved left and i set eyes on some beautiful printed dresses:

i am enamoured with this print and the pleats on this style at the front are adorable, but i found the straps and the white underlayer to be kind of cheap and unreliable looking. therefore i fell more in love with the style behind it- not very visible above, but here's a picture from the website:

really, this would be the perfect summer dress. i can just see myself in this adorable number accesorized with strappy sandals and large sunglasses, shopping in the sun somewhere... ok i won't get carried away, but my heart was instantly seized with that hunger one can only get for a specific item of clothing, that primal, tearing need to shop. of course buying it was out of the question, seeing as i couldn't be more broke at the moment, but this dress will definitely haunt my thoughts for at least days to come.

while browsing i was also very attracted to this short sleeve cardigan:

i never quite understood the point of short sleeve cardigans.. i mean if it's cold enough to have to wear a cardigan, you really don't want to be baring your arms right? almost as unfathomable as short sleeve winter coats. however, for a short sleeve cardigan, this looks very chic indeed- not at all cheap, and in person the fabric feels soft and cozy. the cardigan also speaks to me in a very A.P.C/boy by band of outsiders/ 3.1 philip lim kind of way- am i even making any sense? it's not overly designed, very effortlessly stylish. i quite like the look of it. i also like the idea of wearing something stripey in it.. usually i do not applaud target's poor styling, but their idea is a good one. i'd probably go with wider strips and a lower neck ( such as a navy blue and white wide striped camisole) to make it more nautical chic, and then maybe push it a little and dangle a chain link necklace around the neck, what about that? pair with dark pinstripe shorts and t strap flats.. well i'm getting carried away again.

alright, as an alternative to my sublime blue and green summer dress ( or maybe as an addition!), i found a psychedelic floral print in the same style:

this would also be awesome with some nice brown gladiators, a head band and some sass :).
and last-look-wise, this rack of print:

is covetably visually exhuberant. pick yourself up any of those items to get a healthy dose of thakoon for the cheap :). though I, unfortunately, could not bring home any thakoon goodness with me, browsing the collection alone was a joy, and especially with that thrill of "well if i really really really wanted it, I COULD AFFORD IT!" well, at least when i cash in my last paycheque..

oh there you have it in a nutshell. rush to target NOW. that's my word of advice. i hope you will all get as excited as me!

(oh how i love having this blog so i can post about materialistic things my mum thinks i'm crazy to be jubilant and abnormaly passionate about.)

tights!tights!tights! and kitsch 1990s lace

i was bumming around style bubble and stumbled across this article: a meditation on the ny times' article about the return of sheer and lace black tights. now if you know me, you know that i love sheer/lace tights as much as any other; i own about a million pairs of black textured tights and 2 pairs of sheer ones, one plain and one with a back seam courtesy of my stint at american apparel. but, admiring the pictures accompanying this article, i suddenly decided that all the tights i owned didn't matter- the only ones i wanted and the only ones i would ever need in order to make my life complete were these ( on the left, sheer with black hearts):

i absolutely adore the look of these tights. they may look like sheer black tights with polka dots at first glance, but a quick zoom into the picture tells you that these tights are in fact SHEER WITH TINY LITTLE HEARTS- how cute is that? and who other to think up such a darling design but Betsey Johnson herself? the article cites 30 dollars at betsey johnson, but alas, i stalked the betsey johnson website and couldn't find them, thus a panic attack ensued. thankfully a quick google search yielded the necessarily knowledge: the tights are purchasable at Urban Outfitters, but alas, quite unreasonably, they are only available in the UK.

I can just picture wearing this sexy pair with an american apparel high waisted shiny skirt in champagne lustre ( worn as a dress, of course) for a perfect new year's eve outfit. :)

well, moving along, i've left new york city after horrendous finals and have now found myself comfortably in suburbia, idling in my mum's apartment. ah, the life. apart from spending most of my time baking brownies and frosting cakes, i constantly raid my mum's old 80s/90s wardrobe, and have actually come up with some darling vintage finds in the process. among my finds were an amazing alexander wang-esque grey button down tuxedo-vest dress that i am sure my mum has never worn in her life ( photographs will come shortly), an old country-granny type floral embroidered wool vest, and the most amazing kitsch lace top with extravagant sleeves. this top is, just about the most over-the-top cheap lace confection i have ever seen in my life, and that makes it extremely covetable. i tried it on and cinched it's shapeless waist with a skinny brown belt and Voila! instant glamour!

look at that adorable bottom hem! what do you think? i paired it with my american apparel black acid-wash jean shorts but i dare say they would look fine with simple skinnies. ( excuse the poor quality of the photos, i took them with apple photobooth).

oh i love my mom's wardrobe. now if only i could get my hands on grandma's stuff...

so i just had my first assessment today...and

...here's my outfit. i tried on two different blazers. I went with the blue instead, contrasted the yellow better. nothing new here except for the blue jacket from h&m, and the yellow Anna Sui long sleeve that my lovely grandma sent over, i really love the lose sleeves and especially the cute white bow infront :)

menswear inspired outfit. i wore a silk striped men's shirt that i thrifted at goodwill, with the sleeves rolled up. belt is from no. 6 vintage, sample sale. i wore acid wash denim shorts from american apparel underneath, they're hidden though :). tights and flats are from urban outfitters. detail:

i've been pretty enamoured with urban outfitters lately, but then again i always have been. especially this Kimchi and Blue dress:

The Sartorialist, lovely coat, and Decemberists dress

I went and caught the The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman, speaking at NYU yesterday to the Fashion Business Association. He talked a lot about his vision for the website, how he came about starting the blog, his experiences in the fashion industry and a lot more. I won't delve into the details, as I am sure a quick search on google or a look into his new book ( which, according to him, will come out soon) will give you the information you need about his background history and his fashion connections- (after all this man was voted as one of the top 100 design influences by TIME magazine- that's no small feat), but there was something he did say about his vision and his choice of people to photograph that really connected with me. he said he wasn't necessarily looking for an elaborate outfit, or something different and shocking, but something that everybody could identify with that carried it's own imperfect elegance. i know that all sounds very vague, but it made sense to me. one always notices small details of perfection, or perhaps fleeting moments of infinite stylishness, on people who aren't necessarily the most trendy or cutting-edge, and it's this feeling that makes the moment so beautiful. this relatablility. (wow i am making no sense now.)

but look at the images he captures. sometimes, plain people, plain clothing, plan backgrounds even. but something about them and how they are put together just mesmerizes- you think i could be that girl. except i'm not. i dont have THAT one thing. that "thing" so abstract you dont even know what it is. yet he captures it.

ok, too much text and rambling in this post. but here's an image he posted that i absolutely loved, and this lends me to a new topic: amazing winter coats.

the coat itself is from Anthropolgie ( I did some background research), but it's sadly not in stores anymore. I panicked for about ten minutes after realizing this but then decided that just the fact that a coat so beautiful exists is gratifying. Actually this isn't the first time i've seen this coat. A girl i passed walking on the street while rushing to class was wearing it, and I remember thinking: "that is an amazing coat- look at those ruffles!" I only wish I had stopped her and photographed her- and then we could put that photo side by side with this one by the Sartorialist and do some comparing and contrasting, and my lack of photographic skills in comparison to his superior ones will become clear :), but just as well, i didn't take that opportunity.

this post has been a wall of text. let me share an outfit with you that i wore to see The Decemberists last wednesday:

the dress is vintage. I bought it at Kensington market in Toronto last last summer. the belt is from h&m- speaking of which, I will drop by today to catch some of the Commes des Garcons collection frenzy :). expect a new post in a few days!

Fashion Snapshots:
I've always loved taking photos of things I see on the streets I find remotely amusing, so its no surprise that I take snap shots of fashion in the streets. Living in London, being fast paced is something I've observed and now a master of, and thus its impossible to take a photo of someone walking on the street, unless there was a red light involved and you get your chance to "snap" in that split second, and me being me, I'm quite shy to go up and ask to take someone's photo, so I'll have to do this the paparazzi way...And not to be caught for invading other people's privacy, it makes it extra hard for me...
I've only been here for less than two months, but its been a feast for my fashion-thirsty eyes:

From South Kensington to Camden Town:

1. Cute vintage looking sun dress in the middle of S.Kensington, casually accesorised - with a red sling back and a short sun hat.
2. Print tee with all the fashion capitals in the world - New York, Paris, London, Milano!
3. The thin belt trend this season - worn with a long sleeved tunic.
4. Look at the texture on her skirt! chiffonish folds!
5. And the Goths in Camden Town
6. Yes Pleats! I want a pleats skirt now.

Here's my very very incredibly late Paris fashion week recap. sorry guys!

Ah, Paris. There is logic behind the saying "saving the best for last", you know.
let me share some of the highlights of what i saw at Paris fashion week this season.

1. Military inspired goofiness and dreamy florals at TAO BY COMME DES GARCONS:

I was immensely impressed with this collection. I loved everything from the inspiration to the execution to the presentation- and I'm a huge, huge sucker for buttons and florals. it was flawless. I'd never payed much attention to TAO before but this collection definitely got me jumping on the train.

just look at those striking male models and their wonderful outfits! :) that aside, once again, amazing silhouettes from Balenciaga, and I always love anything shiny. this is a brand that always keeps it interesting- I can remember no instance of them being anything short of inspiring.
wear these looks to: an art gallery opening. and then clubbing.

3. Chic blue belted sophistication at VERONIQUE BRANQUINHOM

the lines of this collection really impressed me. the overall feeling came off so nice and sophisticated. that one landscape dress is mouthwatering, and the overall styling is just impeccable. another designer to watch.
wear these looks to: work, at the office.

4. Fantastical lost worlds at TSUMORI CHISATO

I don't know why, but this collection brings to mind fantastical lost worlds for me. I love the boho chic of it all, the braids, the ridiculous tribal-inspired shoes, and this brand's overall willingness to go crazy with prints and colour.
wear these looks to: a picnic. a photoshoot picnic. central park.

5. Amazing silhouettes and art deco inspired talent at REQUIEM.

another collection that completely, utterly, blew me away. This designer uses black and white like no other. I love the unlikeliness of the designs. these looks are red carpet ready and just scream "i have immaculate taste."
wear these looks to: a posh, high end dinner party. everyone else will just look tacky beside you.

6. richness and complexity at MIU MIU

look at those hungry eyes! Prada somewhat redeemed herself with her collection for MIU MIU this season. I can actually see myself wearing some of these pieces- I personally enjoyed the genius of the first look, the tattered, ragged, holey pleat dress. and that harrowing makeup- oh, it's too much.
wear these looks to: tour the DUOMO. in Milan. and then go to see the opera.

7. Thigh skimming sexiness at DIOR.

here's where I'm going to bring up the "sheer" factor of Paris this season for the first time ( but definitely not the last): there is an abundance of sheer looks this season! the designers are re-embracing the sheer trend. look at how this is reflected in the Dior collection! everything is short and amazingly cute looking. the models sport adorable little buns on their heads while wearing gorgeously sheer flowly skirts and dresses. perfection!
wear these looks to: a cocktail party in the flower garden. am i making sense?

8. Bow ties and coolness at CHLOE.

I love how CHLOE girls all look effortlessly cool.loved the bow ties and the scalloped look in general, and how everyone has windblown hair and is sporting an expression of nonchalance.
wear these looks to: school. seriously. you'll be the coolest kid in class.

9. Class, duh, at CHANEL

could CHANEL every make something crappy? the answer is no. This season's mega-collection once again set the bars for elegance, class and high end style. look at those amazing sheer leggings- sheer again!and that first dress, that ethereal goddess of CHANEL look. you cant even downplay it. you cant.
wear these looks to: the Oscars. or something. do not desecrate CHANEL clothing by going out to the ghetto or something with it. respect, respect!

10. Ok now you can go to the ghetto in these at VIVIENNE WESTWOOD.

just kidding. I actually enjoyed the VIVIENNE WESTWOOD collection this year round. the outfits were crazy as always- when were they not? but there's method in the madness. the loose gladiators are amazing- does this mean the gladiator trend will live another year? please do!

11. The perfect hourglass shape at RUE DU MAIL.

Stunning colour palette too. and the detail!

12. The epitome of sheer amazingness at NINA RICCI.

what did I say? sheer sheer sheer! these girls look lovely in the muted colours and the sheer, sexy leggings.

13. wearable contemporary art at HUSSEIN CHALAYAN.

his designs this year remind me of a psychedelic trip to the MOMA. and that's a compliment- I love the MOMA.

14. Playful summer notes at CACHAREL

CACHAREL always keeps it young, flirty, and colourful.
wear these looks to: Paris. the whole collection screams Paris, in the spring time. Oh love.

15. Oh those ruffles!!! at VANESSA BRUNO

the ruffles are too much. I just want to go worship them. there's something about tiny, delicate black ruffles that is so endearing.

16. more sheerness! and highwaisted suspender trousers at JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

why do i like brown coloured suspender trousers, belted at the high waist? I have no idea.

17. the perfect artsy little lady at AGNES B.

everyone wants to be her.

I love this whole girls in a guy's clothes but looking sexy as hell thing. I don't know how he pulls this shit off but he does. I want to wear that first look on the street. smoking a cigar. with red lipstick on.

Valentino's always so sweet and classy, I almost can't stand it. the change of designers seemed to be no problem this season. the line's signature look is still going strong.

I'm realy liking this collection this season as well. the shiny sheen of the clothing, the muted gold touches. and of course, the fit of the blazers is orgasmic.

I normally really dislike Gareth Pugh but this season was big highlight for me. are the clothes wearable? no. but they sure are inspiring, theatrical, and interesting to look at. I love them pleats.

24. nice pins at CHRISTIAN LACROIX.

there really is more to it than that. it's late and i'm falling asleep. I love those lace pants. and that green dress reminds me of fine decadence. don't ask why.

25. dipdye and sheerness, my two favorite things, at CELINE

Why does Celine always make the nicest dresses? and they always look like you need to be especially gorgeous and worthy in order to pull them off. I am not gorgeous and worthy but still, i drool over them. I love the banded waist area.

26. This is just cool at VIKTOR AND ROLF

I didn't even like the rest of the collection. but i had to put this picture up. psychedelic awesomeness, you guys.
don't bother wearing this look. just marvel at it.

ok, that's the last look. an amazing muticolour, floral-coral print (at least that's what it looks like and I just want to say floral-coral) coat dress. oh the things I would do for this coat. i feel like if Joseph from 'Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat' was a girl, this would be her look. no wonder all them brothers were jealous.

I have to say I was a little bit disenchanted with the big names this season.. all the fresh new looks of London are still lingering in my head. I wish I had Amanda's job :).

But the looks from Milan, in the end, come from the long-established fashion houses and designers, and are not to be overlooked. really, the more you look at these collections, the more you understand why these name have stood the tests of time- everything hopelessly oozes style,elegance, sophistication.

But- and here's the big "but"- first off i have to express that i was deeply disappointed with Prada this season. this was really the only look I liked:

I have to say the scrunched up fabric gets a little bit tiresome after a while.. and the colour palette was just not the best. oh Prada, what happened????

But then again. let's get down to some of the designers that really really impressed me this season.

1. MARNI

By far my favorite collection from Milan this season. the layering of this collection is just ingenious. the colour palette is breathtaking, and i love the quirkiness of the sheer tulle-like fabric over print. it's a little bit marc jacobs meets prada, in her good days. i want to look like this please.

2. LUISA BECCARIA

this is what summer should be like- offwhite dresses, sheer fabrics, wavy hair and maximal prettiness. this collection blew me away.

3. VERSACE

though i'm not much of a Donatella fan, i just love the in-your-face ever present sexiness of Versace. very Italian, I must say.

4. MOSCHINO

i liked the ruffles, the cigarette pant, the hair.oh glamorous decadence.

5. MOSCHINO CHEAP AND CHIC

this season, cheap and chic brings us the perfect summer lady.

6. PUCCI

I love those Pucci colours, and next summer is going to be a very colourful season :). at least for those Pucci ladies. :):)

7. FENDI

I don't know what people I would kill to own that first belt and that second dress. Karl always does it right.

Now I'm waiting for Paris. and Chanel. and then there will be a long, amazing post. just you wait.

Topshop Unique - The eighties are BAAACK!

Say Hi to the new generation of bow head bands! The show started with a striking blazer dashed with diagonal multi-coloured heart prints, pencil pants - Topshop brings the 80s back with this quirky new collection - high waisted pants (with loose blouse hanging over it), soft pastel punk colours, exaggerated pattern prints, jeans dungarees and the ever so popular thin waist belt - just the right kind of casual. The collection really emphasised a tight waisted hour-glass silhouette. I really adore the bow hair pieces :D Check out the lovely kiss-o-meter tunic! [As usual, click on the pictures below for larger images!]

Christopher Kane - Fashion of the Apes!

I'm sure you can guess where Christopher Kane's inspiration for this season came from: The movie; Planet of the Apes, his leather skirts were inspired by leather tunics in the movie. Overall, this collection surrounds "animalistic" themes (leopard prints, fur trimmings etc) with big semi circular geometric cuttings & patterns on the skirts and dresses. You'll still get traces of the sheer and lace trend from the A/W '08 collections.

My favs from the collection:

Eley Kishimoto - Summer Wonderland

This collection reminds me of vintage children book's illustrations - what cute outfits the little girls would wear. I love the tunics with the baby girl floral prints, peter pan collars and fish scale pattern on the tights as well as the sequins. May and I just simply love the collection.

Erdem - I love floral lace.

We're seeing plenty of embroidered floral lace on ruffled garments - this collection accents the carefree atmosphere of a perfect summer day - picture this: you wearing one of the dresses and dancing around in the meadow covered in knee high flowers, where you gently lay on top of fresh flower pedals. I also love the ballerina wedges, the colours of them are amazing.

Luella - OMG:LOVE.

As May puts it (and I agree) Luella has the best collection this season [from what I've seen so far] I'm all about symmetry heheh, but the asymmetrical ruffled skirts creates such voluminous effect :) Also, seems like many designers are reinventing 'loud' head pieces, in this collection Luella has a collection of bright coloured bows and netting for hair deco. Oh! The variety of textures! The bright colours! Rough cut Jackets! WE LOVE!

Harlan Bel - photodiary.

I recently discovered a lovely collection - Harlan Bel, designed by graduate of Parsons the New School for Design, Brandy Lunsford. I want to draw your attention specifically to the cut and tailoring of these pieces- simple colours, but the details, the fit, the silhouette, all= perfection.
On their website, the brand is being described as influenced by vintage and modern equestrian design- now that's something pretty interesting to me, but I can definitely see it in the lines of the pieces, especially some of the pant looks.

well, i don't go horse-riding much, but i definitely wouldn't mind playing dress up in some of these clothes :).

Project Runway S05E09

Manda: So here we go again, another disappointing challenge - The Designers were told to design an Avante Garde Look, partnered with the designers whom were previously eliminated. Most designs: Failure Relapse.

May: The designers were told to create an avante-garde look with previously eliminated designers WHO DIDNT HAVE A CHANCE TO COME BACK INTO THE COMPETITION- come on that isn't fair! I want my Daniel back! But oh well. I think compared to previous challenges, the designers actually did considerably better this time around.

BLAYNE and STELLA:

Manda: Yet another "pooping fabric", I can totally see the messy ruffles as an amazing scarf, but seriously, this outfit is "Rainbow puke meets Leatha!"

May: This is the worst outfit of the whole episode. what a disappointment.. Blayne churns out the same ugly things again and again. If i ever saw anyone walking down the street/ at some sort of an event with this look on, I'd probably send them straight to the mental hospital. The black leather things look like they came out of a sex shop, some kind of weird bondage gear or something. then he basically put her in a white wetsuit and stuck a bunch of multicoloured tulle down her bodice. puke.

JERELL and JENNIFER:

Manda: I think this outfit is very well tailored, this look is very complete, though I would say that the skirt isn't that all flattering [the checks are very Prada] and I really like the print on the blazer, and the little feathery details on the cuffs.

May: I loved the skirt of this look, especially the pleats at the hip- very darling. the jacket i didnt dig as much- jerell to me is either a hit or miss. But overall, it was a nice look. gold sequins are always good.

JOE and DANIEL:

Manda: Straight-On Avant Garde. But I am undecided about this look. I guess the top part is cute, [the gems on top and the fabric reminds me of Dior]. I think the pancake bottom is interesting, but the depth of the ruffling layers are too unevenly even it doesn't see like its done on purpose.

May: After close viewing, i've decided that i actually like this look. the fabric used to create the skirt is quite stunning. Daniel's immaculate taste comes through here. it does kind of look like a volcano, though, doesnt it? with lava spewing down the sides or something. i cant even remember what horizontal sign this was inspired by though.

KORTO and KELLY:

Manda: I don't like the straps on the shoulder, it doesn't really make any sense to me, the colour of the strap doesn't compliment the dress, and I think the colours of the dress is really not that original. Bleah.

May: Oh Amanda, I disagree!! this look was my favorite! the model looked like a fairy coming down the runway, ephemeral and dreamlike. this dress has to be seen in action- it flows so beautifully. I think there are also many signature Korto elements here, her style is really coming through. I would have picked this look for the win. I love it.

LEANNE and EMILY:

Manda: Yes, the dress captures your eyes like it's suppose to, the shaved-layering of the semi collar is amazing work, but I do want to point out that I dislike the colour combination. The singular oval pieces on the dress is quite interesting. Hmm.

May: I also dislike the colour combination. Leane is very good at the unexpected pleats/cuts thing, she's in her element here, so it all turns out very nicely. but red and black just doesnt work for me. I would have liked to see some grey in there or something.. i'm a grey lover :)

SUEDE and JERRY:

Manda: I really liked this. Although it wasn't Avant Garde enough, we've seen the master Jil Sander work the see through materials, but i must say that Suede and Jerry did a good job making the clothes flow - even with the puffy pants with the choked ankles, they sucessfully detached itself from being "Aladdin".

May: This look didn't deserve all the grief it got. I liked the top, flowed perfectly and was very darling. don't quite dig the genie pants though- sorry Amanda, Aladdin came through for me. I agree that the look wasn't avante garde enough, however. I would have been glad to see Suede go, though, despite this. never liked him much.

TERRI and KEITH:

Manda: Terri, What the Fug? This looks like an art work display of what your insides would look like if you had Lung cancer. This photo does not do justice; it looks much worse on the runway.

May: Hated this look. it was so tacky. all the fabrics were ugly and Terry was a queen bitch to Keith. Booh. Glad to see her gone.

KENLEY and WESLEY:

Manda: This look is very interesting. I think the shoulder sleeves should've been more exagerated, perhaps in a more fierce shape - (not making it look like someone stuffed your sleeves with tissue paper) Anyways, I like the selection of fabric/prints, the spacial floral skirt is very cutely vintage.

May: I actually liked this look. the judges are so mean to my dear Kenley. This look, to me, is very reminiscent of Prada (the fairy collection), with the checks and the florals. I love how Kenley isn't afraid to take risks. I mean, this silhouette might have been done before, but what in fashion hasn't been done before? seriously. it's a cute outfit and I applaud it. :)

s/s 09 lessons

Since all the s/s 09 collections from New York are out, I thought I'd do a little guide on what s/s 09 NYC has taught us about what to wear for the coming spring ( or even the end of this summer, since you've already seen the styles anyway. ) so, a few pictures of my favorite looks ( i just had to single the 3.1 philip lim piece out in a previous post, sorry, haha) and a few words of wisdom.
what we should do for Spring 09:

1. Alexandre Herchcovitch - don't be afraid to look ridiculous. play with proportions. ridiculous can be chic.

2. Betsey Johnson - wear bold colours and continue that affair with florals.

3. Cynthia Steffe - go grey. and wear awesome knee socks.

4. Koi Suwagganate - embrace your femininity. wear gorgeous floaty dresses and kill everyone around you with your beauty.

5. Lela Rose - cinch that cute little waist. and- CARDIGANS!

6. Marc by Marc Jacobs & Marc Jacobs - wear awesome jackets/blazers, with awesome buttons. and embrace that loose pant look.

7. Matthew Williamson - be a vixen. and a hippie. at the same time. sexy hardcore hippie anyone?

8. Boy by Band of Outsiders - fitted bandage skirts are sexy sexy sexy.

9. Erin Fetherston - wear Pastel colours and make like a fairy!

10. Tory Burch - high-waisted is still in. and very chic. also, have perfect hair. :)

11. 3.1 Philip Lim, again - elaborate necklaces and shiny sequined stuff is still awesome.

take some style cues from the big names. it's not too early to start shopping for spring! oh god, i'm so inspired and we havent even seen Milan & Paris (the BIGGGG names) yet. anyone else THIS excited about the Prada show?!

oh, and i went and spent almost 100 dollars today, shopping around east village. bought a vintage dress at the number 9 sample sale, which i will now have to pay to dry clean, but is still lovely (look at the ANIMALS!) :

In the past few months before I graduated high school this year, I designed and made some fashion related artworks for my Visual Arts Class. I'm still an amateur designer experimenting with basic materials X]

Origami Bodice.

This is an Issey Miyake Inspired Bodice.

Issey Miyake is a legend for using Origami and modernising kimonos' voluminous concepts in many of his designs, this is why I chose this great fashion master's work as my inspiration on this Project, i wanted to create a short dress or a gown that was made up of all the "folded-fan shaped-flowers", but I decided to make just a little bodice to illustrate this experiment of mine, as I was also out of time and nearing the end of the course. This idea actually came from couple of designs from my "Paper Dolls" series:

here i am, my first contribution to this blog. thanks amanda, for taking my mind off the hectic college life and giving me this little internet haven of fashion. :) i figure i should start out by introducing one of my favorite designers of all time, Chris Benz.

i love this guy. what i'm gonna put here is his resort collection for 2009. he uses the most amazing colours and he plays with silhouettes like no other. this is what i'd like to call " i just rolled out of bed and threw anything on but i still look fucking amazing" look. here are some of his pieces:

RATE the RUNWAY:

BLAYNE:

Manda: I've got to say, those bubble pants are interesting and the print is nice, but i can't seem to get 'pajamas' out of my head. Blayne doesn't fail to squeeze in a flash of his "trademark" neon colours. hmm, but what is it you're trying to say with your outfit, Blayne?
May: Hated the bubble pants. sorry manda.i just dont think anyone can pull that shit off. the coat was decent.. but there was nothing new about it. blouse looked like some scarf stuffed randomly in the opening of the jacket collar. i'm not impressed. dont like Blayne.

JERELL:

Manda: I don't mind this look, cute sheer-glitter pencil skirt, though I'm not a big fan of 'Mo' hair, cute outfit overall. But I was thinking, that this look would look better with a thinner belt. But after looking at DVF's look book, I think this is merely a copy of her collection.
May: I think this look looked so much worse on the runway than here. i thought the top was horrendous!or maybe i'm just biased 'cause i dislike turtlenecks. and yes, this is a blatant copy of this look, straight off her runway:

Manda: I see the "shanghai" element, and perhaps "spy" with the hideous hoody to hide under, the colour of the blouse just doesn't cut it.
May: This look looked so much better as he was creating it on the mannequin than on the runway. i actually feel bad for the dude, i think he had a decent idea, it just came out wrong. i mean, the execution was just bad bad bad. this guy just got too ambitious.

KENLEY

Manda: I like how the print turned out on the dress, but i'm still undecided on whether the lace works with pop floral prints! I definitely see some chinese element with the tight bodice and short turtleneck.
May: Manda, call me tacky, but i think pink lace would have worked- not hot pink, but like a nice rose pink/scarlet. but then, i still like this dress with black lace. this reminds me very much of Fa Yeung Nin Wa ( In The Mood For Love- Wong Kar Wai, film buffs). this is very sexy shanghai. i love the talent that Kenley has.
- something unrelated: Heidi's face when all the judges disagreed with her comment about Kenley's look not including multiple pieces? Classic. looked like she ate shit. :)

Maggie Cheung in one of the exquisite dresses of Fa Yeung Nin Wa.

KORTO:

Manda: I'm not sure why this look was so appealing to the judges, I don't think pairing the metallic pattern print with the yellow really shouts 'fashionable' and I think it is quite boring. However, I do think the cutting of the front is nicely draped, creating gentle waves.
May: Are you serious? i loved this look! i loved the yellow and the psychedelic black/white spiral print, i thought it was extremely eye-catching. actually, i probably would have picked this look to win - but then again i dont know, it was really close competition between Korto, Leanne, and Kenley for me.

LEANNE

Manda: I love the dress, especially the colour and the look of the fabric. I also love the jacket, but I don't see the two working together, as the dress already has a long trail of pretty ruffles, I think the layering on the jacket just makes the outfit too bulky.
May: This jacket gives me small orgasms- the colour, style, the cut of it, yes yes yes. I'm liking Leanne more and more. i thought the dress was beautiful, but i'm not a fan of long dresses so it wasn't anything breathtaking to me. overall, i thought her design fit the brief very very well.

STELLA

Manda: "Count Draculess" - Bye Bye Stella
May: Haha, i love how you have nothing to say. yeah, this did look very "dracula" and the execution was horrible, but really i didnt think it was that atrocious. and Stella did kind of grow on me, much more so than Blayne or Suede. and she's pretty. oh well. bye Stella.

SUEDE

Manda: I guess the Jacket is kind of cute, I like the cutting and the 'awkward' shape, I can see it worn with the simple - wife beater & dark A-line jeans, but I really don't like the dress, nor the fabric.
May: But see, the problem with what was underneath, whatever it was, was that it WASN'T a dress! it was this weird awkward pant/dress thing, and it looked incredibly horrendous when she was moving. i mean, standing here in this photo she actually looks half decent, but i promise you that this look was completely atrocious on the runway. i dont understand why the judges cant just send this guy home, i cant stand him anymore!!!!!

TERRI

Manda: Coat, Boring. Pants, Boring (plus it looks very badly tailored, the crotch area looks a wee bit too tight). Blouse: Cute, maybe I'm biased because I love the fireworks print.
May: Amanda, except the print was the only thing she didn't make about this whole outfit, she took the sample from DVF's sample room. therefore, i do not give any props to Terri. this look was boring, she is, exactly as Joe described, a one trick pony. i'm sick and tired of her turning out bad looks every episode and getting away with it. i wish the judges would just get rid of her. THE MODEL HAS CAMEL TOE FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! that's it.

Blogging Project Runway Season 5 Episode 7

We've transferred our 'Project Runway Blog' from Facebook to here and here's our latest entry:

May: I feel like I need to get back into the right frame of mind and my normal routine, being a total fashion nerd ☺ so I’m going to start blogging project runway again. Yay! This episode was actually surprisingly decent. I thought it would just be shit after all those good designers were eliminated from the show the last few times due to the idiocy of the project runway judges, but this time round I actually saw some good fashion being produced on the show. Moving on to rate the runway.

Manda: So... I've skipped Episode six, because like May said, there really isn't much to comment just that Daniel shouldn't have gone home. Okay, I didn't really liked the challenge; I feel it wasn't very original or constructed [since the materials were already in the car... i guess its advertising for 'saturns'] but I loved the outcome!

BLAYNE :

May: Blayne’s outfit was bad, just bad. It was typical tacky Blayne. What do you expect? The outfit looked like one of those poorly made prom dresses they sell in jc penney or something, lacking totally in taste and design. Just throw on some shiny stuff and make it look ridiculous and try to get fashion. The top fitted so blatantly poorly that I couldn’t for the life of me understand how he wasn’t at all concerned about it before the runway show. Why is Blayne still here?!

Manda: The model's boobs' look like they are at different levels, and this garment officially added 20 pounds on the model. I don't really understand the silhouette, I mean if the top is suppose to be loose, it should've been done more exaggeratedly (bare backed), but if it were loose, it won't be able to enhance the "rhinestones" he used on the top, and yep the judges were right, the dress was a bit too long, it really didn't hide the fact that the garment was indeed made from parts of car interior. I do like rhinestones though.

JERELL:

May: Jerell’s outfit, I have to say, was a stunner this episode. Normally I’m on the fence about Jerell’s stuff and his overall taste level, but he really proved himself in this episode. I thought this outfit was totally cute and looked like it came straight off the ready to wear runway. Loved the model’s hair as well.

Manda: This really reminded me of last year's MaxMara & Dolce and Gabanna collections, with the futuristic hairdo and the robotic garments, but I really liked the dress, I like how Jerell added 'soft' shapes on the dress and he really spread the 3 tones of colours well.

JOE:

May: Overall I’d have to call this a pretty boring dress. Nothing about it was terrible really, but it just didn’t stun me or wow me in a good way. However, I give him props for not doing something in the same colour scheme as everyone else ( i.e using the seatbelts.)

Manda: No, I don't understand. First impression: F1 racer. I really don't like the feel of it, the model seems to be wrapped around with a "blown-up" car seat. I think the colours doesn't work.

KEITH:

May: Keith really blew his chance this time to turn out something better. The outfit wasn’t very impressive. I thought the back was pretty disgusting actually, with that weird fishnet fabric and the skirt all ripped.

Manda: Too bad Joe had "immunity", because I don't think Keith would've gone home with an boring outfit. I think this is quite a boring outfit, its already the 7th episode, this is more like 1st episode material. Bye Keith. (you should learn better; don't talk back at the judges. -_-)

KENLEY:

May: This time I wasn’t so much impressed with what Kenley made. I thought the drawn on pattern was a cute idea, and she definitely had an innovative silhouette going on there, but it just wasn’t really that flattering. And drawing on patterns in the end of the day IS kind of amateur.

Manda: As much as I think the zebra print is interesting, no one will wear something with prints/patterns that is water soluble to some red carpet event. Again, I think the silhouette is quite interesting, reminds me of something Pierre Cardin designed back in the early 90's with the fanned out waist. This also reminds me of Miu Miu's S/S collection this year with the mini dresses. But I do find the skirt a bit too straight and awkward, I would preferred it to be shorter, about mid thigh length, it would make the fanned out skirt pop!

KORTO:

May: I really loved this coat by Korto. I can really see Korto’s signature style emerging from these episodes, and I’m beginning to really like it. I would wear this coat just as it is. Very cute.

Manda: ALAS! Something not boring! Okay, I'm going to make references again; this reminded me of Bottega Venetta's weave. This looks really intricately executed and I like the loose "Men shoulder" sleeves (i have a black zara jacket that follows this style) it makes the silhouette not boring and it allows space for the big weaves to "move around". I would totally wear it if I were that tall and when I wear it, the hemline of the jacket won't reach my shins...

P.S. D'you see Korto's face after the Judges made their comments?

LEANNE:

May: Hands down best outfit of the episode. This dress is so unbelievably cute and sexy. I love everything about it, especially the bust area and- screw that, everything. This is something I would gush about if I saw it on the runway. It’s even vaguely reminiscent of chanel couture ( wow, that’s about the highest compliment I could give.)

Manda: I love this! I disliked almost all of Leanne's outfits in the previous challenges. I don't think I ever gave a ten before.. heh. Well, I think how she ruffled the cut-out seat belt parts were really innovative, I like how the ruffles cross each other (hiding the cleavage lol). The "weave" and over lapping of the fabric around the waist is simply stunning! I love how this emphasised the female silhouette, also, this looks like something from an editorial spread in VOGUE! Perhaps Balenciaga or Prada? (Prada did something similar with the weave in the bag collection earlier this year) p.s. I WOULD WEAR THIS. I WOULD SO WEAR THIS.

STELLA:

May: To tell the truth, I really didn’t mind this outfit that much. I mean, it wasn’t beautiful or anything, but I think stella actually deserves some points for making something different. The skirt is very Herve Leger bandage- though a bit poorly made, still flattering I think. The top and the skirt don't look right together, but it’s not atrocious. Stella didn’t deserve this much of a beating for this one.

Manda: The top is fine, I'm okay with the skirt. The combo is bad. Looks like Frodo (May, you know lord of the rings right?) in the top wearing the skirt. If she were to go with the pattern of the skirt and made a full-on cocktail mini dress, it might be better, as the top really doesn't go well with the skirt. Stella, please don't waste our time.

SUEDE:

May: Ugh, this looks like some kind of tacky hooker’s outfit. I mean, the shining stuff was cute, in a way, but this dress once again just doesn’t measure up to taste level. And it really does blatantly look like she’s wearing a car tire. I just can’t see anything in suede.

Manda: I think the outfit is interesting, with the combo of materials, but the design is a little amateur, its not really new, however, I think tires make fun bodices :D

TERRI:

May: Ahhhh!!! Here is where I once again do not understand the judges!! This outfit was horrendous! I don’t understand how they cant see the “horrendosity” of it. This really, really really, looks like something stella would wear.. and that’s not a compliment. I feel like terry has been making a lot of fugly clothes lately. This is definitely the outfit I would have chosen to go home, no matter what the judges say.

Manda: What the f&%$ is this. Isn't the model wearing Stella's clothes? Terri looks like she went to pick up scraps from a gothic rock thrift shop and pulled together the rejects.
